With scenery that, in its own way, is as spectacular as the mountains in the west or the deserts in the south, the train lines running through New England and southern Quebec are fit for passenger excursions for the sole purpose of looking out the window.  So too thought the Acadian Railway, which in 2002 ran passenger excursions on both the international lines in the area--Canadian American (now Montreal, Maine & Atlantic) and the St. Lawrence & Atlantic.  The journey of the trains I've seen starts out in Montreal, then follows the CDAC line to Lennoxville, Quebec before continuing either east (CDAC, in the early summer) or south (SLR, in the fall) to finally end up in Portland, Maine.

This is the trial run of an Acadian Railway express train running along the CDAC line East from Montreal, Quebec, then South down to Portland, Maine.  Here, it's passing through the wind and rain of a short summer shower through Lennoxville, Quebec, some 5 kilometres South of Sherbrooke.  The train consisted of two ex-Amtrak F40PHs, 293 and 311, with rumbling HEP systems, in silver and red livery pulling seven matching, beautifully restored stainless steel streamliners.  Despite the fact that the Nathan K5LA--a classic Amtrak horn--was placed atop the cab, the engineer was particularly generous with the whistle blasts.

By the time the train had travelled East and reached Birchton some 40 minutes later, the rain had cleared up and the sun revealed (when it chose to shine) the bright silver and red colours of the train.  The engineer was again blowing very long whistle blasts, as the train clattered past with riders peering out the windows at trainspotters.  All along the entire CDAC line people had gathered here and there waiting for the special train to pass.

On an overcast Sunday afternoon, ex-Amtrak F40PHs 293 and 311 head south past Compton, Quebec, with the 7-car passenger train.  Funnily enough, while I was recording and photographing the train, the conductor was videotaping out the window as it passed.  Unlike in the above recordings, the horn was sounded at its fullest.

Acadian F40PHs 311 and 293 prepare to transfer onto the Canadian American line in Lennoxville, Quebec to continue their journey from Portland, Maine, to Montreal, on October 08, 2002.  The K5LA horn is a bit more blasty than that on 293. The train is currently stored for the winter and will emerge next summer with new logos applied to the locomotive fronts and an observation car with re-profiled wheels.
