
Locomotive Phases and Rosters - EMD GP11
The GP11 is an Illinois Central rebuild of older GP-series locomotives, including the GP7, GP9, GP9B and GP18. The phases below are for the GP11 rebuilds themselves and do not reflect the phases of the original locomotives prior to rebuilding.
These phases are of my own making.
Phases
Phase 1a: prototype, IC 8301
Phase 1b: CRR 4600-4605; IC 8701-8717
- Hood roof access panels: close together
- Cab sub-base doors: partial horizontal ribs
- Battery box doors: no ribs, 2 sets of 3 louvers
- Cab side: smooth
- Short hood: 1 vent on right side
Phase 2a: IC 8718-8721
- Battery box doors: horizontal ribs, 2 single louvers
Phase 2b: IC 8722-8725
- Cab sub-base doors: full-width horizontal ribs
Phase 3: IC 8726-8753
- Cab side: bolted rectangular panel around window
- Short hood: 2 vents on right side
- Fewer bolts on blower duct housing (left rear behind cab)
Other details
- IC 8301 (the first GP11) differed from other Phase 1 units in several details, including hood door height, additional louvers on the rear hood doors and the absence of a front plow/anticlimber.
- Depending on the locomotives used for rebuilding, units of all phases may have front or rear fuel fillers and 36" or 48" fans. One unit (8720) was rebuilt from a GP18 with lengthwise air reservoirs and grilled radiator intakes.
- A few units were rebuilt from GP7's, which had cast coupler pockets/striker plates and different air reservoir piping than the GP9.
- Six GP7 units were rebuilt as GP11's for CRR. Later designated as GP16 by CSXT, they were nearly identical to IC Phase 1b GP11's.
