A very late-running 394 train passes by at night, with three GP40s managing a little over 20 mph with almost 80 cars. The horn on 3204 is a K3H, with the bottom note missing.
SLR (LLPX) 3206 EMD GP40 | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 0:27 |
| Date: 2002-08-23 Location: North of Waterville, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Airchime K3L, K3H Category: Riding the brakes |
Dynamic brake fans whine as GP40s 3206, 3204 and 3001 hold back 96 cars coming down the grade from Waterville, QC. This was a late-running 393 freight; the returning train (394) was led by 3204 and was recorded later that evening. GP40 3206 has a very pleasant Airchime K3H.
SLR (LLPX) 3205 EMD GP40 | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 0:12 | No photo | Date: 2002-08-26 Location: South of Lennoxville, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Leslie S-3L, RS-3L Category: Light work |
GP40s 3205 and 3207 approach with a 4-car local freight. The blasty Leslie RS-3L of 3205 is blowing for a private crossing.
SLR (LLPX) 3205 EMD GP40 | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 0:56 |
| Date: 2002-08-26 Location: South of Lennoxville, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Leslie S-3L, RS-3L Category: Light work |
A minute after the previous recording, GP40s 3205 and 3207 pass with their short train towards Courval Road North of Waterville, QC. The engineer greeted me with the bell.
SLR (LLPX) 3203 EMD GP40 | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 1:09 | No photo | Date: 2002-09-01 Location: South of Waterville, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Airchime K3L, K3H Category: Running the mainline |
After passing through Waterville at half-throttle, GP40's 3203, 3202, 3206 and 3204 are revved up to run-8 to accelerate their 93-car train, crossing a rural gravel road (Drouin road).
SLR (LLPX) 3004 EMD GP40 | Analog, 44 kHz MP3 1:23 | No photo | Date: 2002-09-23 Location: South of Waterville, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Leslie S-3L, RS-3L Category: Running the mainline |
The definition of run-8 EMD sounds. GP40 3004 leads sisters 3204, 3203 and 3207 on a 77-car 394 freight crossing Drouin road, on a flatter section of track past the Waterville grade. The prominent whine for the first part of the recording is from the turbocharger of GP40 3004, a characteristic shared with SLR 3806 (formerly SLR 3209). 3004 has a Leslie S3L with an intermittently functioning middle chime.
SLR (LLPX) 3208 EMD GP40 | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 1:15 |
| Date: 2002-10-08 Location: Lennoxville, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Airchime K5LA Category: Easing through town |
GP40s 3208, 3002, 3202 and 3206 creep through Lennoxville, QC, shortly after the passing of the Acadian Express passenger train. This recording provides a clear sample of the bell of 3208.
SLR (LLPX) 3003 EMD GP40 | Analog, 44 kHz MP3 0:51 | No photo | Date: 2003-02-07 Location: North of Waterville, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Leslie S-3L, RS-3L Category: Running the mainline |
GP40 3003 was known for its Leslie S3L with a #25 chime that alternated between the horn's lowest note (C) and its highest (B) while making entertaining squawking sounds... These are the finest such sounds I have on tape. The unit was leading GP40's 3203, 3204 and GP40X 3209 in notch 8. The "hissing" of the engines is typical in very cold weather.
SLR (LLPX) 3004 EMD GP40 | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 0:44 | No photo | Date: 2003-04-11 Location: North of Compton, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Leslie S-3L, RS-3L Category: Running the mainline |
GP40s 3004, LLPX 3105 (ex-CSX MOW, still in orange paint), 3208, 3207 and 3204, all accelerating with 69 cars after exiting from a speed restriction in Waterville.
SLR (LLPX) 3004 EMD GP40 | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 0:43 |
| Date: 2003-05-19 Location: North of Waterville, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Leslie S-3L, RS-3L Category: Running the mainline |
Run-8 GP40s 3004 and 3211, along with coasting LLPX 3107, make light work of the 35 cars rolling behind them, moving them along at 35 miles an hour (55 km/h). This was an evening SLR 394 freight.
SLR (LLPX) 3206 EMD GP40 | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 1:42 |
| Date: 2003-05-20 Location: South of Lennoxville, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Airchime K3L, K3H Category: Running the mainline |
A long recording that goes from the haunting calls of the horn of 3206 in the distance to the train roaring past a minute later. GP40s 3206, 3003, 3002 and 3000 formed a rare solid set of yellow-painted units.
SLR (LLPX) 3204 EMD GP40 | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 0:54 |
| Date: 2003-06-10 Location: South of Lennoxville, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Airchime K3L, K3H (1 bell silent) Category: Running the mainline |
GP40 3204, LLPX GP40 3105 and GP40 3211 have a 69-car freight moving at a good clip.
MMA 3613 GE C30-7 | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 0:47 |
| Date: 2003-06-20 Location: Lennoxville, QC Railroad: MMA Horn Type: Airchime K3LA Category: Easing through town |
Westbound MMA train rolls around the sharp curve leading into downtown Lennoxville, QC. On the point are C30-7s 3613 and 5023 (the latter still in Burlington Northern paint) easing 45 cars downhill.
SLR (LLPX) 3002 EMD GP40 | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 1:07 |
| Date: 2003-06-21 Location: South of Lennoxville, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Leslie S-3L, RS-3L Category: Running the mainline |
This was one of the first of many trains I saw later where the engineer had elaborate fun with the horn, seeing me taking pictures. The train was led by GP40's 3002, 3004 (the source of the turbo whine) and 3208.
CN 5359 GMD SD40-2(W) | Analog, 44 kHz MP3 0:34 | No photo | Date: 2003-07-06 Location: London, ON Railroad: CN Horn Type: (No horn blasts) Category: Running the mainline |
CN SD40-2W 5359 and SD50F 5418, passing through Greenway Park in London, Ontario, with a 51-car Westbound evening Intermodal freight. The two run-8 engines sped the train along at over 50 mph (80 km/h) to make the fastest freight train recording I have.
SLR (LLPX) 3208 EMD GP40 | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 0:42 |
| Date: 2003-07-13 Location: South of Lennoxville, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Airchime K5LA Category: Running the mainline |
A veritable horn concert coming from a friendly SLR crew. GP40 3208, GP40 3211 and LLPX GP38-2 2260 are in charge of a 63-car freight.
SLR (LLPX) 3206 EMD GP40 | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 1:07 |
| Date: 2003-09-05 Location: Waterville, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Airchime K3L, K3H Category: Uphill battle |
This was the first time I discovered the short but steep grade entering Waterville, QC, which later became one of my favourite trainspotting locations. This is the sound of GP40's 3206, 3211 and 3203 headed upgrade at 18 mph with 70 cars in tow. While I was amazed at how the units were slowed by the grade at the time, I later came to expect other trains cresting the grade in single-digit speed. Icing on the cake was a series of friendly horn blasts from the engineer.
MMA 8525 GE B39-8E | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 0:45 |
| Date: 2003-10-10 Location: Lennoxville, QC Railroad: MMA Horn Type: (No horn blasts) Category: Light work |
No, this isn't an ALCO pounding away as it throttles up to accelerate a 10-car eastbound local freight; it's one of MMA's ex-GECX B39-8E's, and the sound is coming from a GE 16-cylinder 3900 horsepower FDL engine. The train was exiting Lennoxville, QC, and was passing through the colours of the fall countryside. Note the artwork on the hood—this was the first time I'd seen such grafitti on a locomotive.
SLR (LLPX) 3208 EMD GP40 | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 0:53 |
| Date: 2004-01-12 Location: North of Waterville, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Airchime K5LA Category: Running the mainline |
Another enthusiastic greeting from an SLR crew made for an upbeat beginning to 2004 trainspotting. What sounds like an attempt at "Jingle Bells" on the horn turned into a series of short blasts. GP40 3208, GP38-2 2260 and GP40s 3207 and 3203 make light work of the 54 cars following.
SLR 3803 EMD RM-1 | 22 kHz MP3
44 kHz WAV 1:03 | No photo | Date: 2004-01-29 Location: North of Waterville, QC Railroad: SLR Horn Type: Airchime K5LA Category: Uphill battle |
This was the first train I saw powered solely by SLR slug sets. The consist was GP40-3 #3803, RM-1s #805 and #804, and GP40-3 #3806 managing 20 mph on a late-running, 65-car 394. The very long gap between the sound of the locomotives whining reveals the two near-silent RM-1s in the middle. The horn of #3803 is a K5LA that was suffering the effects of snow partially clogging some of the bells. |
