Pure, uninterrupted EMD engine sounds. GP40X 3209 and GP40s 3001 and 3203 blast upgrade on a scorching summer afternoon. With the lack of air conditioning, the crew could only open the door and hope the heat from the working locomotives stayed behind them. GP40 3001 had a minor mechanical issue at the time that resulted in puffs of smoke accompanied by a reduction in rpm.

GP40X 3209 and GP40s 3001 and 3203 at the same location as two days earlier. The relatively past pace of the locomotives (30 mph or so) belied the 85 car-freight stretched out behind.

GP40X 3209, GP40's 3206 and 3001, and GP40X 3210 in run-7 (then 8) on a 68-car freight. The engineer yelled a "hello!" out the window as the train passed. The long whistle blasts only served to highlight how discordant the Nathan P5 horn on 3209 really was - the "strangled goose" as I called it. It sounds exactly the same on the unit's later incarnation as SLR 3806.

This is a stunning example of how quickly a train can appear out of nowhere, and how equally fast it can disappear again. This is GP40X 3210 and GP40 3001 coasting downhill from Waterville, QC with a 6-car local freight.

This was the first train I saw powered solely by SLR slug sets. The consist was GP40-3 #3803, RM-1s #805 and #804, and GP40-3 #3806 managing 20 mph on a late-running, 65-car 394.

The very long gap between the sound of the locomotives whining reveals the two near-silent RM-1s in the middle. The horn of #3803 is a K5LA that was suffering the effects of snow partially clogging some of the bells.

This was the first time I witnessed SLR's road slugs battling the 1% grade entering Waterville, QC. It was an impressive sight: 2 SLR slug pairs, 83 cars, full throttle, sanders blasting, 10 miles an hour. Motive power was GP40-3s 3803 and 3805, with RM-1s 805 and 806 between. While I was initially blown away by this performance, it was in fact typical of most slug-powered trains at the crest of this grade.

SLR train 394 headed East with GP40-3 3804, RM-1 804, GP40-3 3806 and 62 cars, recorded down an embankment, practically underneath the train. The two Geeps, roaring and whining in run-8, were managing a little over 20 mph as they headed uphill. The chorus of whines from 3804 is because of a mix-up of radiator fans with 8 and 9 blades (8 blades is normal). Shortly after passing, the engineer blew the pleasant K5LA of #3804 for the Courval road crossing North of Waterville, QC.

Short but sweet. As GP40-3 3804, RM-1 804, GP40-3 3806 and GP40 3001 exit Waterville, QC, with train 394, the engineer blows a horn greeting, seeing me taking pictures. The relatively short freight was an easy pull for the engines in mid-throttle.

Another recording of the slug sets battling the 1% Waterville, QC grade. This train had GP40-3 3804, RM-1 804, GP40-3 3805 and RM-1 805 in run-8, dragging 103 cars uphill at 10 mph. This was one of the longest trains I've seen behind just two slug sets.

Yes, only two 16-645E3 engines were running on this train, but it could easily have been four by the sound of them. They could be heard 15 minutes before passing. The roar is from GP40-3s 3805 and 3803, with RM-1s 806 and 805 in between, slogging uphill towards Compton, QC, in full throttle at 15 mph (25 km/h). This section of track North of Compton is a brief respite in the grade that stretches past the US border; steeper sections brought the train down to 10 mph.

The brassy Nathan P5 of 3805 was blowing for a rural farm crossing. Note the whine that started up just as the engines were passing, from one of the radiator fans starting up on #3803.

A spectacular example of run-8 EMD engine sounds. This is a close trackside recording of GP40-3 3805, RM-1s 806 and 805 and GP40-3 3803 just as they crest the Waterville, QC grade at 10 mph. The train behind only had 63 cars, but it was rendered proportionally heavier than usual by a lack of Intermodal cars. The terrain and surrounding buildings here (about a hundred feet downhill from the Waterville crossing) create a ground-shaking reverberation of the engine sounds.

SLR GP40-3 3805, RM-1 806, QGRY GP40 3102 and GP40 3008 (dead-in-tow) haul a roughly 80-car 394 freight past the Courval Road crossing. The units are getting a run for the Waterville grade, which they will later crest at about 10 mph. Since my regular visits to this crossing in previous years, it has been upgraded with new signals and gates.

The same train led by 3805 cresting the Waterville grade at 10 mph. One of the radiator fans switched off on QGRY 3102 as it passed.

With the locomotives still in full throttle, the train picked up a bit of speed as it exited Waterville. The landscape at this location tends to amplify the engine sounds as the train approaches.

After starting the first two units of the consist of Train 394 (GP40-3 3803 and GP40-2 3035) the crew moved back past RM-1 805 to start the last unit, GP40-3 3805. The train departed the Richmond yard soon after the units were started - it had been sitting ready to go and was waiting for track maintenance vehicles to clear the line.

Another greeting from the engineer. GP40-3 #3806 leads RM-1s #804 and #805 and GP40-3 #3803 on a 57-car train 394. Snow had clogged the #1 and #5 bells of the P5 horn on #3806. The horn is so discordant when fully functional that it almost sounds better without these two bells.

Here again are 3806, 804, 806 and 3804 on a run-8, 20 mph freight. The sound of a jet at the beginning is quickly overpowered by the locomotives as they roar past with train 394 (61 cars). All the horn bells were functioning this time.

How slow was this train? The gap between the first and second whistle blasts of GP40-3 3806 was so long that the unit's oscillating ditch lights (activated by the horn) stopped flashing.

GP40-3 3806 (with RM-1 805) and GP40 3206 passed the Waterville, QC crossing at about 10 mph, and were likely in single-digit speed while climbing the 1% Waterville grade before the crossing. However, after the train passed onto level track beyond Waterville, the speed was up over 20 mph. The train was an afternoon 394 freight with 59 cars.

GP40 3000 leads an ex-BRC LLPX GP38-2 (either 2231 or 2232), GP40 3733 and the second ex-BRC GP38-2 in a roar of pleasing EMD engine sounds. GP40 3000 was running at reduced rpm for much of 2000 due to a mechanicl problem, and its droning is evident for the first part of the recording. The horn sounds like a hybrid Nathan P3, with bells #1, #2 and #3.

GP40 3000 (not running), GP40 3002, IC SD40-2R 6002 and GP40 3003 put on an impressive show as they roar past at 10 mph, after starting a 71-car freight from a standstill on the 1% Waterville grade.
