GP40 3002 was not running on this train, but that's not evident with GP40X 3209, GP40s 3003 and 3208, and GP40X 3210 roaring behind in full-throttle. They were leading an average-sized (70+ cars) train at about 30 mph. The loud whines at about 0:24 and 0:29 are from the radiator fans, grouped together by the four running units being coupled in back-to-back pairs.

This was one of the first of many trains I saw later where the engineer had elaborate fun with the horn, seeing me taking pictures. The train was led by GP40's 3002, 3004 (the source of the turbo whine) and 3208.

GP40 3003 was known for its Leslie S3L with a #25 chime that alternated between the horn's lowest note (C) and its highest (B) while making entertaining squawking sounds... These are the finest such sounds I have on tape. The unit was leading GP40's 3203, 3204 and GP40X 3209 in notch 8. The "hissing" of the engines is typical in very cold weather.

GP40s 3003 and 3202 struggle at the foot of the Waterville, QC grade at 15 mph, filling in double-duty as GP40-3 3806 and RM-1 805 follow dead-in-tow. The GP40-3 had quit because of low cooling water, taking the RM-1 with it and effectively cutting tractive effort in half.

After stalling on the Waterville grade, GP40s 3003 and 3202 (with dead GP40-3 3806 and RM-1 805) pulled a few cars into Waterville to drop off on a siding, then backed down to the foot of the grade to start the train again. This is the sound of the units making a run-8 start, heard from a few hundred feet away.

The definition of run-8 EMD sounds. GP40 3004 leads sisters 3204, 3203 and 3207 on a 77-car 394 freight crossing Drouin road, on a flatter section of track past the Waterville grade. The prominent whine for the first part of the recording is from the turbocharger of GP40 3004, a characteristic shared with SLR 3806 (formerly SLR 3209). 3004 has a Leslie S3L with an intermittently functioning middle chime.

Run-8 GP40s 3004 and 3211, along with coasting LLPX 3107, make light work of the 35 cars rolling behind them, moving them along at 35 miles an hour (55 km/h). This was an evening SLR 394 freight.

One of the most impressive trains I've seen. Run-8, sanding, 7-8 mph, and a chorus of roars and whines. This train had GP40 3004, GP40 3001, RM-1 806 and GP40M-3 3806. The two GP40's were running at reduced power to prevent wheelslip (a subtle decrease in the pitch of the turbo whine gives it away) but 3806 was running full-tilt - a testament to the incredible pulling power and superior adhesion of the slug sets. Luckily, this is a short grade, and the train reached 20 mph after passing - the GP40's can only run in single-digit speeds for a limited time before risking traction motor overheating. Although not all that long (89 cars) the train had many loaded cars.

Another train battling the Waterville grade. GP40s 3004 and 3202, along with GP40-3 3805 and RM-1 806, have a 66-car freight under control on a frigid evening. Once again, the two GP40s are running in "power-matching" mode—the engine sounds are subdued and none of the radiator fans are running (hence no whine)—while the GP40-3 and RM-1 are putting out full power. With no traffic and the train only moving at 10 mph, the whistle blasts were very timid.

GP40 3202 had an incredible Leslie S-5T that was one of the loudest horns I'd ever heard. It was later replaced by a melodious but less blasty Airchime K5L. The only other unit on the SLR at the time to have a Leslie S-5T was SLR (LLPX) 3207, but it never had more than two functioning bells and it too was replaced. Years later, when sister GP40 3207 was purchased outright and renumbered to SLR 3008, it received a nearly identical-sounding Leslie S-5T - either the one originally on 3202 or the one on 3207 restored to full sound.

GP40's 3203, 3204, 3202, 3004 and (not running) 3000 creep past an unsignaled crossing shortly after exiting the SLR yard in Sherbrooke, QC. This was my first encounter with the newly arrived (in 2002) GP40's, numbered in the 3200 series plus 3004. 3203 was one of three 3200-series units with an Airchime K3H, the others being 3204 and 3206.

After passing through Waterville at half-throttle, GP40's 3203, 3202, 3206 and 3204 are revved up to run-8 to accelerate their 93-car train, crossing a rural gravel road (Drouin road).

Some interesting sounds come from these four GP40's as they pass. They were revved up to run-7 from run-6, but at the time the fourth unit was in idle—a fuel-saving feature. With the extra power required, it subsequently revved up to run-7 as well.
